Prepare Before Your Visit to the Doctor to Avoid Confusion

You’re going on vacation tomorrow, so you spend a few minutes or more organizing yourself. You make sure you have your tickets, traveler’s checks, itinerary ready to roll. It’s a smart move to make sure nothing is forgotten.

It’s good to do the same thing in preparation for a visit to your doctor. Often we see patients who don’t remember what medications they are on, have tried a medicine with another physician that did not work, or who have allergies but don’t remember what they are. Forgetting some of these could be dangerous to your health and more annoying than getting to the airport and forgetting your ticket.

Take a few minutes to organize yourself before you come to see your doctor. If you have past medications that have failed to work, write down the names or bring them with you. Have a list of your routine medications and your allergies and keep that in your wallet. Those could save your life if you ended up in an emergency situation and could not communicate with a paramedic or doctor.

And please take a moment to make a list of the questions you want to ask or the issues you want to discuss. That way you won’t remember the important question you wanted to ask us while you are driving home from the visit!
